Private fees

Private (Non-NHS) Services & Fees
Information About Non-NHS Work

At Coventry GP, the majority of consultations and services we provide are funded by the NHS.

However, some services requested by patients, employers, solicitors, insurance companies or third parties are not covered under NHS contracts and therefore attract a private fee.

Examples include:

Medical forms and reports
Insurance paperwork
Private certificates and letters
HGV and employment medicals
Certain vaccinations
Private prescriptions

Fees for private work are charged in line with British Medical Association (BMA) guidance where appropriate.

Important Information

Fees must usually be paid before documents are released.
Processing times can vary depending on complexity and GP availability.

Private Prescriptions

Private prescriptions may occasionally be issued where clinically appropriate.

Medication costs are separate from any consultation or prescription charges and are payable directly to the dispensing pharmacy.

Accessing Medical Records
Medical Records Requests

The practice complies with UK GDPR and Data Protection legislation.

Requests for access to medical records or medical information should:

Be submitted in writing
Include patient consent where appropriate
Include identification if requested

Some requests may be free of charge under data protection legislation, although administrative charges may apply in limited circumstances permitted by law.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why Am I Being Charged?

Certain services fall outside NHS-funded care and require clinicians to complete work outside their contracted NHS responsibilities.

Private reports and forms often require:

Review of the full medical record
Clinical assessment
Professional opinion
Administrative processing

Why Can Private Work Take Time?

GPs prioritise urgent NHS clinical care and patient appointments.

Private paperwork is usually completed alongside routine clinical responsibilities and therefore turnaround times can vary depending on workload and complexity.

Can the Practice Refuse Private Work?

Yes. GPs are not obliged to complete all private forms or requests and some requests may not be clinically appropriate or possible.

Suggested Fees Table (EXAMPLE STRUCTURE)

You should strongly consider adding a clean fee table instead of vague wording.

Example Layout

Service Typical Fee
Private Sick Note From £50
Holiday Cancellation Form From ££50
To Whom It May Concern Letter From £50
Fitness to Travel Letter From £50
HGV/Taxi Medical From £50
Insurance Forms From £150
Firearms Licence Report From £100+

(You can tailor final pricing internally.)

Using a transparent fee table looks far more professional and reduces reception queries significantly. Similar local practices already do this effectively.
